THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SONGS TO ENHANCE VOCABULARY AMONG YEAR 3 STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the use of songs in enhancing vocabulary among Year 3 students. This study involved 70 Year 3 students in one of the primary schools located in Chemor, Perak which is a rural area. In this study, a total of 70 students were randomly selected through the "Randomize Me" application. Of the 70 students, 35 students were randomly selected with the same application to be used as an experimental group. Meanwhile, 35 students were made into a controlled group. This study is a quantitative study that purposes to increase the effectiveness of the use of songs to enrich vocabulary among Year 3 students. The instruments used are collection of songs from Gets Smart Year 3, questionnaires using Likert Scale, pre-test and posts involving   the    VKS    (Vocabulary    Knowledge   Scale) method. The intervention period for this study was for 4 weeks which is twice a week for 2 hours. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and inferences after analyze through SPSS. Pre-VKS test results showed no significant difference between the two groups on the pre-VKS test scores. The results of the post-VKS study showed that there were significant differences between the controlled group and the experimental group. The experimental group obtained significantly higher achievement and improvement compared to the controlled group. The findings also show an increase in the level of motivation among students in both groups after using the songs as a measuring tool. The experimental group showed a significantly higher improvement than the controlled group. In conclusion, the method of using songs to enhance vocabulary among Year 3 students has increased the achievement and level of motivation of students to learn English vocabulary more effectively. Implications of the study show that the use of song can help to strengthen and improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning English especially for vocabulary mastery.
